  26. It might help to think of NTSC as a lossy compression method.  The
  27. question then becomes, What pixel resolution is high enough to look
  28. okay after NTSC compression?  The "right" answer is predetermined by
  29. the hardware you use to do the compression.  720 x 480, 720 x 486,
  30. 752 x 480.

  32. The "resolution of NTSC" is a different question that's not easy to
  33. answer.  525 lines vertically, not all of which contain image informa-
  34. tion, and this is split into two fields.  For broadcast, about 330
  35. lines horizontally--but that's for luminance.  Chrominance is a lot
  36. lower, but the human eye is less sensitive to chroma resolution.  On
  37. the other hand, chrominance goes through a phase shift cycle every
  38. four fields, which has the effect of dithering temporally (an increase
  39. in apparent resolution).  This is where crawling dots come from, and
  40. the main reason the Toaster builds frame grabs from four consecutive
  41. fields.
